2009dixielogosmall Owosso, Michigan (Friday, February 19, 2010): We’re nearly two months into 2010, and I still find myself writing “2009” at the end of every date. Between the writing I’ve done for school and what I’ve done for the race tracks, I seem to regularly write the wrong year down. But the more often I type 2010 the closer we are coming to the start of the 2010 racing season.

Of course, unofficially the season already began with Speedweeks down at the New Smyrna Speedway in Florida. Jimmy Novak and Erik Jones both got their feet wet in the ASA / Crate Late Model division while 2009 Owosso Speedway Fall Nationals Champion, Travis Eddy came VERY close to winning the Florida / IMCA Modifieds Championship. I spent all week in front of the computer reporting their results and it was nice to see our drivers representing Michigan very well down in Florida.

Also this past weekend was the 7th annual Michigan Short Track Racing Club Bowling Tournament at Capitol Bowl in Owosso, Michigan. It was my second year attending, and just like last year had an amazing time. You never realize how much you love your racing family, until you see them over the off season and realize how much you missed talking to those people who seemed to be there at every turn during the summer.

While I bowled a lot better than I did the year before, I still was pretty mediocre, which has put the nail in the coffin of my PBA career. Of course, my team was buoyed by the skills of Durand High School bowling phenom, Kendra Lauderdale, who made me look like an even worse bowler than I already was. Thanks Kendra!

On a serious note, it was very heartwarming to see $2,135 raised to help out former two-time Owosso Speedway Track Champion, Alan Taft and Jeremy Dickman, who is very involved with the Mt. Pleasant Speedway as the Webmaster and a host of other duties.

The racing community has its drama, as everyone does, but when united, this community can do some amazing things. This bowling tournament put on every year is a great example of this. Chuck and Brenda Darling, Matt and Elaine Prieur, Ed and Linda Inloes, and Verwayne Greenhoe all deserve a ton of respect for everything they put into that tournament, and I can’t wait to return in 2011.

Maybe by that time Super Dave Kennedy and the Basement Dawgs can collaborate on a few songs from the AC/DC catalogue.

As of this writing, less than seven weeks until the first Test and Tune at the Dixie Motor Speedway, and soon afterwards, opening night at both tracks. Every second it gets closer.

This column will remain bi-weekly through the off season because if I don’t keep writing, I may be driven insane by the need to be at the race track.
