DIXIE MOVES TO SATURDAYS FOR 2008

Track officials have announced that beginning with the 2008 season, Dixie Motor Speedway will schedule events primarily on Saturdays. The move comes after a season full of speculation about a change in the day of operation for the 3-track facility.

The speedway, built in 1948, operated on Sundays for many, many years and then, in the 80’s and early 90’s, ran on Thursdays, then again on Sundays, and finally settled on Fridays for nearly 20 yrs. Local residents, Mike and Krista Kern purchased the Birch Run landmark in 1996 and have made numerous capital improvements along the way, the most significant of which was the construction of a new 4/10-mile asphalt oval in 2003. Among other additions, new lighting accompanied the new track and most recently a new scoreboard was added in 2007.

Pit gates will open at 3pm , time trials at 5pm and racing at 7pm. Most events are expected to run about 3-31/2 hrs.

We appreciate your loyal support over the past dozen seasons and know your support has been very intentional and critical to Dixie’s success. We provide the racers and race-going public what we think is the areas premier entertainment product and need to offer it on what we think is the best night of the week; Saturday.

We know that for some of our racers and fans, moving to Saturday will present a conflict. We understand that and hope that somehow, you can still race with us. But if you can’t, we understand and wish you the best.

NINETEEN YEAR OLD WINS DIXIE CLASSIC!

On Saturday, Sept. 29th, the A+ Supply Dixie Cup Series took center stage for the 42nd running of the Dixie Classic 150.  34 Outlaw Super Late Models filled the pit with Hall of Famer John Grega leading the way in qualifying with a 14.368. Canadian Jerry Artuso pulled ahead of the 24 car field to start the 150 lap Dixie Classic.  Flushing hotshoe John Doering, Jr. wasted little time as he took over the top spot on lap 17 and led until the break at the half-way point.  He was not the only one making a move however, as the cream was rising to the top with Johnny VanDoorn, Scott Hantz and Grega all in the hunt. After the half-way break for fuel and tires, Doering restarted with the lead and held it until lap 119 when lapped traffic slowed him down in turn one, nearly wrecking them both. VanDoorn shot to the bottom and stole the spot with Doering on his tail. Doering was on a mission as he made his move on the bottom coming off of turn 4 on lap 136.  But he got loose and spun out which put him to the tail end of the lead lap in 8th place with just 14 laps to go. Doering drove through the field like a man possessed and passed Hantz at the stripe to finish 3rd.  VanDoorn held off on strong charge from Grega to claim his 2nd Dixie win of the year. In three visits to the Birch Run oval, he has 2 wins and a 2nd! Curt Spaulding finished 5th, while Norm Davis, Jared Allison, Claude Plante, Jr., Artuso and Bob Maki rounded out the top 10. Lenny Roberts ran away to win the last chance race but dropped out early in the 150. Series point leader Steve Sauve fell victim to a broken rocker arm, costing him not just a good finish but the Dixie Cup Series Championship. Grega became the first driver to repeat as series champion.

The Hardcore Motorsports Modifieds had their own invitational as Travis Eddy led qualifying with a 16.135.  Travis was looking forward to competing with his father, the legendary Mike Eddy, but on lap 5 of the 50-lap feature he tangled with track champion Chuck Silva sending both cars to the pit.  Phil Bone put the Windpushers #7 in front until lap 15, when Dave Christensen took over.  Veteran Tony Brabbs locked on his back bumper and rode there until lap 33 when he grabbed the lead and never looked back to take the win.  Christensen was second followed by Steve Rollins, Bone and Mike Eddy.

The ShortTrackTrucks.com series was also in action as Paul Schaffer set fast time with a 17.391.  Heat races went to Joey Shuryan and Ray Axsom.  In the 30-lap feature, Josh Leo took the early lead and held it for the first 4 laps.  Series point leader Justin Claucherty took over the lead and had things way until Schaffer caught up with 3 laps to go.  The Grand Rapids driver got around Claucherty and Schaffer went on for his first feature win at Dixie .  John Smaaley finished second followed by Leo, Claucherty and Shuryan.
